Lisa’s Career Stories
How did you pick your career? Did you know all along?
When I was a student studying art at the High School of Music & Art in NYC. I had an interest in Psychology. My father told me about "something called Art Therapy" after reading an article in the New York Times. I thought, "wow, art therapy sounded interesting because it combined both of my interests". My Dad drew me a map and instructed me what subway train to take to the New York Library. Across the street I attended a seminar presented by the Director of Art Therapy at Hahnemann Medical College's graduate program in Creative Arts in Therapy. The Art Therapist presented a case study about a patient who had been diagnosed with Anexoria Nervosa. We listened to how she used art therapy to treat her patient. The young woman had been at death's door, and as we viewed the patient's art we could see how she improved psychologically through the changes in her art work. I was fascinated. I was hooked! I researched and visited all of the graduate programs that offered degrees in Art Therapy. Since my parents didn't have the money to help me pay for graduate school, I figured I should find out more about being an art therapist. I also wanted to make sure that I would be interested in working with patients with mental illnesses. So, I volunteered part time at several mental health institutions over the course of my next 3 years in college. I ultimately got my Master's Degree from Hahnemann University. I loved every minute of my graduate education and went on to work in the field for several years. My career developed over the years to other jobs but counseling and helping others has remained constant part of my professional life.
