Jenny’s Career Stories
When you were a student, did you do anything outside of school to build skills or get knowledge that has helped your career?
When I was 16, I worked in a department store selling games such as 'Scrabble', 'Risk', 'Monopoly' and similar board games. It was during the Christmas holiday season so I didn't really need to push the games. That experience alone taught me that I wasn't cut out for a sales job :) At 19, much to the insistence of my parents, I took a job at a large bank as the front service cashier. I was keen to join the banking sector as that's what my parents wanted (top 3 professions!). I didn't enjoy the environment (toxic); I encountered my first workplace bully. I quickly learnt to stand up for myself, stand for what's right and how to NOT be a manager of people.
What is the one piece of career advice you wish someone gave you when you were younger?
Play to your strengths. Develop strategies and build a team of mates to counterbalance your weaknesses. Better to do it in a group!
