Billy’s Career Stories

In layperson terms, what do you actually do at work?

On a typical day I work to create and deliver employee and leadership incentives for telecommunication; customer service, technical support, bi-lingual and chat employees. These incentives help employees and leaders be recognized for doing a great job and also provide them with a reward. Another role I have is to provide an interoffice engagement to keep moral and office culture positive. I work everyday to build a family like atmosphere. We spend more time at the office then we do at home so it is important to make every attempt to make it comfortable.

What is the biggest challenge you had to overcome to get to where you are now professionally? How did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge I have had to overcome to get where I am today professionally is shyness. Sitting in the background, doing outstanding work is not enough to move forward in a career. I have learned over the course of my career you must take credit for your work and make your self invaluable to your company. Growing mentor relationships are also invaluable to the process. I have reached out and built mentor relationships, I have also been lucky enough to be asked to be a mentor. I found it hard at first but I now ensure leaders know the work I do and I have found doing so has really opened my career path.

What is the most useful piece of career advice you got as a student, and who gave it to you?

The most useful career advice I have received was "Make yourself invaluable to those around you." You do this by reaching out to those around to to see how you can make their days easier. When career conversations come up, you are already on the leaders minds. A previous leader I came across in my career.
