Bob’s Career Stories
What is the biggest challenge you had to overcome to get to where you are now professionally? How did you overcome it?
When I was starting college, I didn't know what I wanted to do. My Dad suggested that I pursue an Accounting career and study that in college because Accounting is the 'language of business' and that I would have lots of career options with that degree. However, the skills needed to be successful in Accounting were the opposite of my natural strengths and skills. For example, I am not an analytical person and working with numbers is not one of strengths or interests. What turned everything around for me was doing self-reflection, starting a journal where I could write down the experiences I enjoyed, etc. Taking career tests such as the Myers-Briggs Personality test and the CliftonStrengths assessment that helped me figure out my natural strengths. These assessments helped me realize my natural strengths and matched me with careers that used those skills/strengths.
