Vaughn E.’s Career Stories

What is the one piece of career advice you wish someone gave you when you were younger?

Positive networking dramatically increase one's chances of success in every aspect of life. So begin with deliberate, courageous, honest, and passionate leadership of self, before leading others :)

What is the biggest challenge you had to overcome to get to where you are now professionally? How did you overcome it?

Finding an opportunity to express my calling professionally. Accepting personal responsibility for failure, coping with disappointment honestly, and bravely engaging opportunities for success.

What is the most useful piece of career advice you got as a student, and who gave it to you?

"Education is about learning to live with people." Mrs. Armstrong, former Principal of B.H.S., on the last day of school. "It's not how you start but how you finish." Dr. Edwards, former President of Anderson University, on my graduation.

How did you start building your network?

Be bold to meet new people, and connect with them directly & simply in person; or through a trusted common 1st connection. More importantly, honestly know one's self & purpose well, and be able to articulate such to anyone you meet.

When did you get your first Big Break? How did you get it? How did it go?

My High School science teacher, hired me at a school where he was the Principal. He saw my job application in a pile, and hired me because he remembered me as a good student. It was a generally good experience.

How did you pick your career? Did you know all along?

From a kid, I always had a passion for social studies. Social concerns, and trends in sports, education, politics, and everyday life always fascinate me with ease. It's a natural fit.

Did anyone ever oppose your career plans when you were young or push you in a direction you did not want to go?

No.

When you were a student, did you do anything outside of school to build skills or get knowledge that has helped your career?

I was very active in cadetting at my high school, and youth fellowship in my church. Also tried a few sports and hobbies!!!

In layperson terms, what do you actually do at work?

I help people be successful at achieving important life skills or goals.

What is it like when your job gets tough?

Mentally, emotionally, spiritually, & physically tiring!!!
