Aubree’s Career Stories
Did anyone ever oppose your career plans when you were young or push you in a direction you did not want to go?
All throughout middle school I was convinced that I wanted to pursue music (singing) as a career. I wanted to travel, doing concerts, and promoting my songs. But I was always told that there's no money in that and that it wouldn't make a "decent living." I didn't care about the money aspect, it was something that I had dreamed of doing. But, I got to high school and started to rethink things and decided that business would be more "reasonable." So I did 4 years at Cornerstone University pursuing my Bachelors in Business Management. Now, I am pursuing my Masters in Project Management through Cornerstone as well. It may not have been my initial dream. But throughout my four years of studying business, I've had a new dream growing. I now plan to own my own business in the near future - a business that integrates hospitality, event/project management, and music!
When you were a student, did you do anything outside of school to build skills or get knowledge that has helped your career?
Gosh, I did quite a bit. Coming in as a freshman to college, I had already had experience in administrative work, child care, a little bit of teaching, and tutoring - all thanks to my 6 summers working with the nonprofit I grew up in as a young kid, Highland Park Community Outreach. So I was able to build on those skills in various positions at my university. I've been vice president of Cornerstone's multicultural organization, project manager for a social media project for CU's Virtue Project, planned and successfully executed campus-wide events for Cornerstone University, worked as a counselor's assistant in our admissions office, worked as a switchboard operator, worked in the food service department, worked as a cashier at Tim Hortons, did an internship with Urban Family Ministries (a nonprofit in Grand Rapids, MI) as a youth worship leader for its Super Saturday program. This mashup of skills has consistently opened doors for me in terms of my job search post-undergrad. I'm just waiting fro the right opportunity to come along.
