ogundiji’s Career Stories
What is the one piece of career advice you wish someone gave you when you were younger?
Honestly, if I could go back and tell my younger self just one thing, it would be this: “Learn the business side of engineering early.” As a civil engineer, you're trained to calculate, design, and construct—but rarely are you taught how projects are funded, how contracts are negotiated, or how to deal with clients, stakeholders, and red tape. In the real world, technical knowledge is only part of the equation. The people who grow fast in this field understand how to balance engineering principles with project management, budgeting, and communication. I wish someone had told me to: Take a short course in project management or construction finance early on. Build soft skills like negotiation, leadership, and public speaking. Start networking with professionals outside engineering—especially in architecture, urban planning, and real estate. The turning point in my career was when I stopped thinking like "just an engineer" and started thinking like a problem-solver and strategist. If you’re just starting out, my advice: Master your core skills, yes—but also invest time in learning how to lead projects, manage teams, and understand clients. That’s how you become more than just another engineer—you become indispensable. Hope this helps someone out there.
