Konstantine’s Career Stories

What is the biggest challenge you had to overcome to get to where you are now professionally? How did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge I faced in my career was switching between different specialties. I started in nephrology nursing, then went to critical care. My critical care knowledge and experience helped me enter the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). Every role needed a unique mindset, specific skills, and a different approach. In dialysis, I concentrated on the regular, ongoing care of patients over the long term. When I started working in the critical care environment for the night shift, I had to overcome my preceptor, who did not want to teach me. After discussing my issues with my manager, she switched me to the day shift. After switching to day switch, I started learning and thriving. There was a great team during the day shift, and I appreciate all the help and navigation on how to care for critical and unstable patients. I tackled it by breaking it down into smaller, more manageable steps. I relied on what I’ve learned and kept telling myself that the basics of nursing—like assessment, critical thinking, and patient care—are important no matter where you are. I asked questions, learned from more experienced nurses, and made sure my ego didn’t interfere with my growth. I experienced the same thing when I transitioned to PACU. Recovery nursing needs a sharp focus on details and quick decision-making, but I tackled it by leveraging my existing knowledge and dedicating time to understanding different surgeries and the effects of anesthesia. The most important takeaway? Always keep learning. Nursing is always changing, and each new role helps you learn something that improves your skills as a nurse.
