Rebecca’s Career Stories

What is the biggest challenge you had to overcome to get to where you are now professionally? How did you overcome it?

I studied accounting, earned my CPA license, and became an accountant, but realized throughout this process that I really would rather have a job that embraced creativity. I had to undo many layers of institutional conditioning and reevaluate my definition of success (everyone defines success differently!) in order to follow my artistic ambitions. Self-discipline, dedication to learning, and passion to create are all things that helped me overcome my previous educational barriers and enter the art world.

How did you start building your network?

We all have begun building our networks, it's just a matter of how you understand networks/networking. Whether keeping in touch with previous bosses or maintaining responsible dialogue with even your friends' parents, we are always networking with every interaction you make. You never know how the person you've just met might be able to fit into your professional path. Be respectful and kind to new individuals and don't burn any bridges!

Did anyone ever oppose your career plans when you were young or push you in a direction you did not want to go?

I think there's a major generational difference between us and our parents. Today's young professionals, such as myself, tend to be interested in a more dynamic career path rather than one job track you stay on for your whole life. As a result, I have certainly received a lot of pushback and worry from my own parents. They were very attached to my accounting career and resistant to change, especially in an artistic direction. However, it is important to have faith in yourself, do your research, and stay focused. Over time you will be able to prove those who were initially skeptical wrong -- which can also act as a motivation to be successful in whatever it is you choose to pursue.
