Do you see a lot of cross-over in the areas of expertise of people with different Earth Science degrees?

There are many different degrees relating to Earth Science, like Geophysics, Applied or Near-Surface Geophysics, Geochemistry, Geology, pure Earth Science, etc, and different colleges offer different ones. I know that there are technically differences between them, but I also know that college degrees can often prepare students for a variety of careers. Do you often see people with different degrees working on the same projects in similar professions? Have you ever been limited in any way by the degree path you chose? Do certain degrees within Earth Science better prepare students for certain activities and responsibilities than others do? #environmental-science #earth-science #nature #geology #geophysics #oil #hydrologist #geochemistry

Do political and industrial motives significantly influence the types of research conducted by Geophysicists and the impacts of the results they find?

I have always been interested in the environment and especially in geology. The amount of information that an experienced geologist can deduce from aspects of the local strata and environment is amazing to me, and I want to use that information to help people live safely and harmoniously with our natural environment. Unfortunately, it has been difficult for me to find a career that allows me to fulfill that dream. I have talked to a few people who quit working at environmental consulting firms because political interests were so much more potent in influencing company decisions than pure scientific research was. My moral code would not allow me to work in situations like that. I hope that Geophysics will have less political influence because of the emphasis on more theoretical mathematics and physics-based research applied to broader subjects like plate tectonics and seismology, but I know that the research still has practical applications and could be affected by political or industrial motives. #physics #environmental-science #earth-science #geology #geophysics

How would one go about pursuing writing while pursuing mathematic/scientific majors?

I love to write, and I want to do much with it (perhaps like Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner and their freakonomics books), but I'm pursuing degrees in statistics and earth sciences. How might I manage to still forge a semi career out of those fields? Of course, the obvious, do the freakonomics thing. Or the Gladwell thing. Or an earth science essayist thing. But, what else could I do, perhaps in college when I'll be so swamped with the immense focus, that I can still follow in a more creative path in regards to writing? #writing #english #statistics #earth-science

What field in earth sciences would use the most statistics to study?

I'm majoring in both earth sciences and statistics and I'm very excited about it. But, within the general field of earth sciences I'm hoping to find something more specific to focus in on. I love soil science as well, and was originally planning on majoring in that, but the lack of options regarding that encouraged me to consider a broader field. Is statistics applicable elsewhere (I mean, of course it is, but where would it truly shine?) #statistics #earth-science

Is it a disadvantage or will a student be viewed differently for attending a community college for the first 2 years in order to transfer into a college that offers a specific program major?

The atmospheric sciences and meteorology program is not offered by a lot of colleges in the state that I live in. FSU's program was ranked in the top 6 in the United States and is my top pick, but it is very competitive to get into. TCC is a community college nearby that has a relationship with FSU and offers meteorology that students can pursue for the first 2 years and then transfer into FSU for the last 2 years to complete the Bachelor's. #science #career-paths #colleges #earth-science #weather

If I pursue a degree in atmospheric sciences and meteorology, how difficult will it be to secure a position in the field and how successful can a meteorologist become in the workplace?

My original plan for college was to target a degree in computer gaming development and/or cyber gaming technology, but I also have a passion for the field of meteorology and have studied it as a hobby since I was 5 years old. Degrees in technology are mostly a sure thing if you have the skill, but there is not a lot of information out there about non-broadcast meteorology. #science #career-paths #earth-science #computer-gaming #weather
