In layperson terms, what do you actually do at work?
I read the rules (also called regulations) that government agencies make. These rules are always released in a preview version before they are finalized so everyone can examine them. Once I've read the preview version and thought about it a little bit, I try to figure out the impact that a particular rule could have on our industry. Then, I determine the best course of action for how to help our industry. For example, if a rule says that every business needs to fill out Form A, we might say "Yes, we agree" and support the rule. Or we might say "No, we don't agree because of x, y, and z". So, every day I'm working with government agencies and businesses to help them reach a solution on a particular issue.
