I am an aspiring music performance major and am wondering how to find gigs and auditions. Is it mostly word of mouth, or are there special places to look?

I am a high school senior interested in studying chemistry. I want to pursue a career in forensic science. I have taken a high school-level forensic science class and really enjoyed it, and I have always enjoyed chemistry, but I know it is difficult.
