How do you ask an institution or professional for shadowing opportunities?

I am currently a college psychology student. There is a particular clinical institution that I would be interested in doing some shadowing at. My problem is that I'm not sure how to ask if shadowing opportunities are available when I have no prior relationship with the institution. My target institution does not list contact information for specific staff members. The only way I can contact them is by showing up at their location (which I am able to do), or by phone, which are typically for referrals (this institution mostly provides counseling services.) The reason I wish to shadow is to build a relationship with the institution to allow for a possible future internship. I also would like to experience what some of these professionals do on a day-to-day basis because I might end up liking this area of my major. How do I present myself as a desirable shadowing candidate when I'm going in cold? And how exactly do I ask for this type of opportunity? Thanks! #psychology #clinical-psychology #therapy #job-shadowing #networking #professional-development #career-planning #career-exploration #communication-skills

Is there a cut-off for relevant information on resumes on Linked In, or should you include everything?

**For everyone who doesn’t have a LinkedIn and is reading this, I’d advise you to make one right now! It helps a lot, and even just making one and adding new things to it helps so much! LinkedIn is getting increasingly more popular with both employers and job-seekers. My university highly suggests making a LinkedIn, and offers tons of workshops and presentations to urge students to get… linked in (pun most definitely intended). On Linked In, there are options for including accomplishments, projects, volunteer experience, and more. Is it better to include everything you’ve done on Linked In, or just the more important or more interesting parts? I understand it's better for your profile to reflect a balanced profile, but this gets fuzzy at times. For example, I’m currently a freshman in college. Do you think I should still include volunteering experience from when I was in 9th grade? What kind of a filter should you use for discerning what to put on Linked In or any CV/resume? What if you don't have many things to write about--should you just only include necessary information or add small things to your profile as well? #career #resume #writing #resume-writing #linkedin #professional-development #professional-training #job-application

LinkedIn profile: Tailored towards a certain profession or master resume?

The reason I am asking this question is because I've seen a number of profiles on LinkedIn that seem to be master resumes and others that seem to be tailored. Recently, I have been starting to use LinkedIn more often and fixing and editing my profile. Does it depend on how you use LinkedIn? Thank you. #career #career-counseling #job #resume #writing #work #linkedin #professional-development #job-application

How do you address recipients in your email professionally?

Hello! I'm currently a freshman university student, and I send a lot of emails through my university email, to professors and university staff alike. I've done research on the right ways to email professors, reading tons and tons of articles but a Google search can't seem to help me. It's a little hard to discern when to use "Professor" and when to use "Ms." or "Mrs." or "Mr."--which is completely different from high school, where seeing teachers daily let you know how to address them. In college, it's a different story. How would you start an email to someone older than you? I always try to look at what they sign off the email with, but starting off with "Hello William," to the head of the Global Studies department is rather off-putting to me. Do you use Professor, or Mr. or Mrs.? What about your T.A.s? Or the head of the Residential Life Department, or a financial aid advisor? What if they're not married? #college #university #communications #professional-development #communication-skills #professional-training #email #professionalism #personal-development

How can I effectively use LinkedIn if I do not have many real-life connections?

I am a high school student and I created a LinkedIn account two years ago but I do not have much on my profile and only 4 connections. I am in school most of the time, so I do not have a lot of work or volunteering experience. My town is small and not a lot of people I associate with have a LinkedIn so I cannot connect with them. Are there other things I can do on LinkedIn to make my profile somewhat decent? I know that I will make a lot more connections and use of LinkedIn once I start college, but is there anything I can do now? #linkedin #branding #professional-development #networking

Do you think it's fair that a single standardized test can define you in your education?

I have recently begun applying to colleges. In doing so, I have been asked on numerous occasions what my ACT and SAT score is. Personally, I believe that one test should not be a determining factor in whether or not you get into college. Students have worked their whole primary education in preparing for college and what comes after receiving his or her diploma. A standardized test does not reflect our learning capabilities, but shows how well we can do taking a test. It is not fair to the people who struggle taking test, and those who have worked all 12 years of their education for this moment. #teacher #education #higher-education #japan #principal #professional-development #education-management
