Is there more than just sending people emails saying you're interested?

I'm fairly new to networking and was wondering about ways I can connect to people. I'm also wondering if there's a good time to make connections, such as when I'm in school or when I get to college.

I am a professional photographer and I am trying to get better at meeting the right people and making the right connections.

I've heard about networking and I know what it is but how do you find the right people to network with? Also, what do you do after like do you write down their info and keep it somewhere safe in case you need it?
