What are the benefits of a double major when considering post-graduate education or the job market?

My name is Ben, and I'm planning on majoring in Molecular Biology, with plans on going to med school. However, because of my passion and talent in music, I am seriously considering to pursue a second degree in music. But after doing some research, I am unsatisfied with the results I have found. The results online seem very vague and obvious. Of course taking more classes means potential for longer time of graduate/increase in tuition and loss of focus/time. Of course it exposes you to new ideas and concepts. Therefore, I am still confused about whether there are tangible benefits, if any, of pursuing a double major. Therefore, my question is: What are the benefits of a double major when considering post-graduate education or the job market? Specifically, what scholarships/grants are available for double majors? Does having a double major give applicants an advantage when going into med school or competing in the job market? #biology #music #job #medicine #college-major #college-advice #double-major

Should I stay in college longer than a planned 4 year path to gurantee getting both of my desired majors?

I don't know the specific college that I want to attend, but for each of my top three choices I want to do a dual major in a business area and science area. The only problem: there is no overlap for possible courses (besides some basic math). I don't know whether or not to drop one of the majors, or to stay at the college a little bit longer to get both of them. #dual-major #double-major #college

Should I study a double major in Music Performance and Business Administration?

I want to become a Property Manager but also I have been playing the clarinet for 9 years and I have filled a decent musical curriculum like playing with numerous ensembles, professional orchestras, youth advanced-orchestras, attending to summer camps to tutor and participate, etc. My main concern is that these two mayors are in two unrelated fields, which means my time management and classes are going to be hard, at least that is what I have heard. #music #music-performance #clarinet #bussiness #property-management #double-major

Is double majoring your first time in college too stressful and worth it? Or should I wait until I know more about what I can do?

The job I want after graduation requires a criminology degree but by getting another degree, I could even go further into that field. Would it be worth it to double major or should I wait longer to see what I can do? #double-major #cost #stress

What careers would be available to an individual interested in neuroscience and political science, two inherently different fields?

I am asking this question because throughout my high school career, I have developed an interest in political science through my involvements at school; however, I am also incredibly fascinated by the nervous system and would love to work in such a versatile field. What would a good middle ground for the two? I have considered double majoring, although I am not sure if that would be entirely realistic. #political-science #neuroscience #double-major

Is there great value in pursuing a doule major or major/minor combination? Or is it better to naroow your focus early on andpursue only one major?

I have contemplated doing a combination of both business and medicine to pursue a positon hospital administration, and possibly a minor in music as that has been a major element of my life thus far. I am wondering if that is maybe taking on more work than it wll ultimately be worth. #college #college-major #double-major #academic-advising #business #medicine

Is there a profession out there that's an equal balance between creative writing/publishing and biomedical science?

I am torn between majoring in English and Biomedical Science/Engineering. I love to write stories and strive to become an editor for a publishing company/fiction author or screenwriter, but I also love genetics and would love to be a genetic engineer and researcher (see the details from my previous question.) My parents don't want me to pursue an English degree because the profession "isn't that lucrative" and I'd spend a long time working my way to steady earnings, but they also want me to find a job doing what I love. They've suggested technical writing, but I fear that technical writing could also mean less creativity when writing instruction manuals or scientific journal articles. Any suggestions or advice from real-world experiences? #creative-writing #technical-writing #writing #news-writing #editor #writing-and-editing #fiction-writing #science-fiction #creative-non-fiction #fiction #copy-editing #publishing #genetics #biomedical-engineering #biomedical-science #career-path #screenwriting #author #creative-writing #double-major #dual-career #multiple-interests #english #communications #grant-writing #proposal-writing #career-path #career-choice #career-decisions

Has anyone combined a dual major in Music and Psychology and what kinds of work are there that use both degrees?

My name is Aiden. I am 17 years old and I live on the Southern Oregon Coast in a little town with about 1000 people. I am going to George Fox University in Fall 2018. I love both music and psychology and I would like to find a career that combines and uses both of them. I am having some concerns about attempting a double major as well as some questions about whether or not it would really be worth it and what I can do with both of them after I graduate from college. #psychology #music #college #college-major #double-major #academic-advising

Would it be advisable to receive an electrical engineering major and get certified in teaching?

I would like to major in electrical engineering and get certified to teach advanced high school math or physics. Is that too many credits to complete in 4 years? I was also considering double majoring in electrical engineering and mathematics. In addition, I wanted to get certified in teaching math or physics for high schoolers. Would that be do-able in 5 years? I have around 40 college credit hours from high school. #engineering #teaching #mathematics #double-major #electrical-engineering

Double major dilemma

As of right now, I am currently an English major finishing up my first semester in college. I really love my major(it was changed from marine science) and I'm so excited to continue on with it and see where it takes me. That being said, I am a little worried about being able to pay off my student loans due to the risk of a very low salary. Because of that, I have been debating a second major in mathematics and then also minor in actuarial science. I truly love math and think I am quite good at it. For that reason, I think I will be able to handle how different these majors are. I suppose my dilemma is knowing if this is a poor decision. To an extent, these majors will compliment each other due to the need to write proposals. However, I am curious as to whether this will hurt or help me get a job? Can I get a job focusing solely on either of the two majors? For example, can I get a job as an editor using the English side of my degree or will I be in a worse position due to the mathematics side being more prominent? I really have a passion for both of these majors, I am just so afraid of making the wrong decision. This will be a lot of work and I want it to pay off and give me a wide variety of careers to pick from. #college #career #college-major #career-counseling #english #double-major #actuarial-science #actuarial

In college, I was planning on pursuing a double major. I was planning on obtaining a PhD in astrophysics and a bachelors in robotics engineering. I was wondering: how hard would this be and would it even be possible?

I was planning on obtaining this degree so I would have a back-up plan in life. If one career fell through, I could rely on the other. I find both subjects really interesting to me and I would like to make possible careers out of them. In the best case scenario, I could possibly find a career where I could make use of both degrees. Please help. #physics #double-major #robotics #astrophysics #robotics-engineer

I was planning on majoring in Astrophysics in college with a PhD, but the college I was planning on attending does not offer astrophysics as a major. However, they offer physics as a major and have astrophysics as a minor. Is it the same?

I am asking this question because it will ultimately determine my future. I was planning on majoring in astrophysics because I find the subject matter simply fascinating. The reason why I have my heart set on this particular college is because I was planning on obtaining a double major, a bachelors in robotics engineering and a PhD in astrophysics. I've been told that with PhD's you have a main area of focus that becomes the essence of your degree, but I'm not sure about the validity of that. Please help. #physics #double-major #astrophysics #science-phd

Could I switch between two professions/jobs?

I was thinking of double majoring in nutrition and music, because I love both subjects so much and want to have both in my life. Would it be possible to switch between the two if one career path does not work out? I want to audition for a music company and be a trainee, but that would require a full time dedication to the music industry. I'm afraid that if I do that, I will lose my knowledge on nutrition and won't be able to go back into that field. But if I start in nutrition and later audition for the music company, I might be too old to get in, and if I do pass auditions, I would face the same problem: trying to get back into the nutrition field. Any solutions?? #career #music #career-choice #career-path #double-major #nutrition #career-change #music-industry

Is a double major in psychology and neuroscience worth it to get an edge on graduate school applications?

I am currently a freshman psychology major and I'm about to add a neuroscience double major because I think it might help me get into a better grad school. The problem is that I'm afraid that this double major might take time away that I could be using for internships/research, etc. It's possible graduate schools might have higher regards for these activities than for a double major, and I don't want to end up hindering myself. Do you recommend I keep the double major, or am I better off just focusing on gaining as much internship/research experience as possible? #psychology #internships #graduate-school #research #neuroscience #double-major #academic-advising #scheduling

Is it possible to balance a double major with one major being architecture?

I'm asking this because I'm interested in architecture and engineering, but I'm also interested in a few other career paths and I'm not sure whether it's better for me to just pick one and go to college for it (since I've been told that architecture is a very time consuming major) or try and go to college for all of them. #graduate #architecture #college-student #double-major

Is it possible to major in languages in which more than one language is mastered at once?

I am currently interested in majoring in languages, however through research found that most majors are limited to specifics. For example I pick up dialect, word choice, and accent quickly and have put it in practice; more than volunteer requirements but as a career. I can't seem to find a major that would allow me to learn arabic, russian, and mandarin for example. I have already taken french and excelled, therefore believe this is a very possible career path - that is if it's available. #college #teaching #careers #double-major #translation #language-services

How does one balance two majors at once?

I plan on majoring in music education with either a second major or minor in psychology. Doing something in the science field was kind of a big leap for me, but I have always loved discovering how the brain works. I thought that pairing my interest of music and/or multilingualism with the field would be fascinating. But if my primary interest, since I was fairly young, is music how can balance the two whilst maintaining a healthy life? #psychology #music #double-major #administrative
