How did you start building your network?

I started building my network through LinkedIn and engaging with others with similar backgrounds to learn and get more experience related to my job field. Another way I reached out to more people was through volunteering at multiple places as you will meet people of all backgrounds and job fields. This can be a great way to find out how people got to where they are and learn what skills they have and how you can learn those skills or improve your existing ones. Lastly job fairs is a great place to network with others with similar skill set and make connections.

In layperson terms, what do you actually do at work?

I am a Data Analyst and on a day to day basis, my duties include Defining and documenting data requirements for data integration and business intelligence applications. Creating and sustaining processes, tools, and on-going support structures and processes. Lastly investigate and resolve data issues across platforms and applications, including discrepancies of definition, format, and function.

What is the most useful piece of career advice you got as a student, and who gave it to you?

Focus on building skills that are in demand as they will likely remain valuable in the long-term, rather than just chasing the hottest job or trend of the moment which can help lead to a more stable and fulfilling career. This piece of advice greatly benefited me as I worked on building skills that helped me land the job I always wanted.
