How do I create my own internship opportunity?

This summer I want to pursue an internship in government or nonprofits. In my local area there aren't a lot of opportunities for me, a first year college student. What would be the best way to approach some of the places and people I am interested in working with to create my own internship experience? Would I draft my own idea of what I would be doing first, or would that step come after reaching out to the different offices and organizations that I am interested in working with? #internships #government #nonprofits #experience #social-work #civic-and-social-organization #community-outreach

Does having experience outside of your preferred career field do anything to you?

I do not have a lot of experience (job or otherwise) in the field that I am currently pursuing, however I do have experience in areas such as working in a museum, teaching and working in the arts (glass blowing, painting, sewing..). Is there anyway to incorporate those skills in the environmental field? Can I place these as skills I have on my resume? Thank you! #environmental-science #experience #resume-writing #museums #art

What are some good ways for high school students to gain experience?

I did not have a lot of experience outside of school and volunteering when I started at university, and my brothers are both looking as they could be in the same boat as I was. I have given them a couple of suggestions from things that I learned, however, is there anything that anyone would suggestion for their fields specifically? One wishes to be an engineer (and a swim coach), the other a game designer. Thank you! #high-school #experience #volunteering #engineering #game-design #sports #coaching #swimming

Do classes count as experience?

I'm a senior in college and I'm an English major with a professional writing minor. I've been applying to jobs since last semester and it seems that every job posting requires 2-6 years of professional writing or editorial experience. I've had at least two years of professional writing in all of my classes but is that good enough to mention to potential employers? #career #career-choice #writing #english #experience #college-senior

How would I get experience in classes my school doesn't have?

My school is very small and has an even smaller amount of classes for the students to choose from for electives and does not have a choice of any AP classes. If I want to do something like Aeronautical/Astronautical engineering, the College/University I may choose to go to may want a better Math/Physics background than what I would get. #college #experience

What job experiences can lead to career in Human Resources?

Hi there, I'll be graduating in an year and I'm looking through my career paths and job experiences. I have lots of experiences of living abroad and willing and wanting to work anywhere in the world. I think some values of skills of HR management really fits to me; such as listening skills, freedom to make decisions, responsibility, and relationship with various people. What kind of industry, job titles, companies, or other experiences can be a valuable add? I see that many jobs in HR require experience within the field, so I'm really curious how to get the entry-level experience. #job #human-resources #experience #college-jobs #international #first-job #entry-level #career-details

As a Computer Science Major (or any CS related major) who has no prior work or internship experience, what do you suggest I do to get a programming job or internship?

As the question states, I am a CS major who has little experience and has only done a few side projects that were not too advanced (in web dev and basic networking principles). I am trying to get an internship and I have been sending out resumes and going to career fairs, but most companies have not responded to me or have rejected me due to lack of experience. Should I be pursuing more personal projects, or should I join a club and/or form a team to try to put out a product? Any help or advice would be great. #science #computer #experience #internship #job-application #career-details

In your experience, are psychology internships *or* research experience more important for acceptance to graduate school?

I'm currently an underclassman, however I'd like to gain some quality experience for grad school. Considering that I'm looking to become a professor who conducts research, I thought that in my case pursuing research experience might be the better call. Is this the correct type of thinking, or would an internship outside of my college count for just as much on a graduate school resume? #psychology #internships #graduate-school #research #resume #experience

How do you gain experience when employers are only looking for workers with experience?

I had numerous experiences where my older brother, who is 20 years and old and going into his third year of college, would come home disappointed that the place he applied for previously did not accept him. Many of these places require outside experiences, but how is it possible to gain that experience when nobody is willing to provide it without other experiences? You would expect that starting from the bottom would answer the question, but even retail stores that are spread across the country require some type of previous retail experience. It is hard to understand the logic behind this prerequisite. #experience #job-requirements

For a college graduate: If you could go back to your freshman year of college, what is one thing you wish you would have known, and one thing that you would do differently?

I know that now, as a senior in high school, there are a few things that I wish I could go back and tell my younger self... such as "don't worry about what other people think of you," "be more outgoing," and "apply for more scholarships your junior summer." In the same way, I am sure that there are practical and valuable things that college graduates wish they would have known when they were first starting college. I was wondering if any people who are now in the work force and have graduated recently or a while ago would share their thoughts! #college-major #graduate-school #graduate #experience #college-jobs #first-job #graduate-recruitment #career-goals
