Dietitian Questions

Hello! I really want to do something in the medical field, and one of my options is to become a dietitian. My questions are: 1. Can I get a PhD for it? 2. If so, what are the differences between a regular dietitian and a dietitian with a PhD (e.g., difference in salary, difference in what they do, etc.)? Thank you!

What careers could I be headed towards?

Hey! My name is Abbey and I’m a first-year student at the University of St.Thomas in St.Paul Minnesota. Throughout my whole life, I've had an interest in sports, health, and the human body. Because of this, I decided to major in Exercise Science and double minor in Nutrition and Business Administration. I was looking at becoming an athletic trainer but decided against it a few months ago. I am really just looking for someone who has some knowledge in these areas, and could tell me a little bit of what I could go into when I'm older that includes my major and minors! And any other insights that I could find helpful in the future!

How can I become a Registered Dietitian?

Hey! I was wondering if anyone on here could tell me the process of how to become a registered dietician! Nutrition has always been something I've been interested in, and it would also be helpful if I was informed of other career paths I could take in this field other than an RD. I was also wondering what I could do in high school, such as volunteering and organizations that I can join, that are related to dietetics or nutrition. I can't seem to find any :( Thanks a lot!

How can I determine the best major and career path for me that will be beneficial in my future and my family?

Hello! I'm not sure how much information you'd like, so I'll start with some basics. I go to a Christian school as a 10th grader and play travel and school softball as my sport. I love to learn about how to stay healthy and improve the health of mine and others. I am disciplined, independent, hard-working, and smart with a GPA of 4.2 out of 4.5 last marking period. I am struggling to pinpoint what I would love to do as a career and want to pursue my passion without the frustration of "working a day in my life". Double Major in Psychology & Nutrition?

So, I’m a senior in college & I’m now questioning all of my life decisions. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE psychology. But I’m just now realizing throughout the years I’ve always had such a strong passion for nutrition & I don’t know what to do. My original plan was to go to grad school & get my masters in school psychology. I’m now realizing that that’s something I just don’t want to do anymore. If I could just start over & get a bachelors degree is nutrition & dietetics & becomes a nutritionist I 100% would. But now I feel like it’s way too late to do anything about it and I should just finish my psychology undergrad degree and apply for graduate school even though I don’t think I will get in nor do I truly want to do it. What would my possibilities be if I got a bachelor’s degree in psychology and nutrition? My parents are so set on me going to grad school that before I mention anything to them I need to have a set plan. I feel like I’ve wasted so much of their money being almost done and realizing my passion isn’t psychology. I just really don’t know what to do or where/who to turn to. Can I still succeed in life? #psychology #college-major #career #nutrition #doublemajor #confused #psychologynutrition #nutritionist

Feeling indecisive-how'd you decide on your major?

I'm basically torn between graphic design, culinary arts and nutrition. My college doesn't offer minors. Since I took graphic design at vocational school and liked it pretty well, I'm thinking about continuing and learning more. But realistically, I don't do as much drawing as I used to, although I consider myself a very creative person. Culinary Arts sounded nice; I'm pretty interested in cooking because it combines world culture and art. But while cooking is fun, I'm pretty rusty, and I get scared off by things like heat and oil. I'm more drawn to cooking my favorite things, and I think at the end of the day I'm more of a baking person. The sound of being a line cook, cooking the same things over and over at rapid speed sounds off-putting. I like the sound of nutrition because while it has to do with food, it's not all about cooking. I find it neat that an every day, delicious thing like food can basically be your medicine, and that could give me a chance to help people. I'd have to take liberal arts first since they don't actually offer nutrition at my college(I'm starting at community college and then transferring). I know I could probably take liberal arts anyway and explore what I really like, but ahh, the other options are appealing. Liberal arts would cut out culinary arts because here in Maine there aren't any 4 year culinary programs. Along with being creative, I love foreign cultures, being hands- on, expressing myself, helping others and making them feel good. How'd you decide? It's almost the start of school and I should really make up my mind! #school #majors #major #college #nutrition #culinaryarts #graphic-design

How much flexibility would I have as a dietitian?

I got my first bachelor's degree with a pre-med intent. After research and soul-searching, however, I decided that a doctor was not the occupation for me. I learned that many of them take few, if any, nutrition courses. It seems as if many medical schools in the US train people to write prescriptions for one part of the body rather than to understand the body as an integrated unit. I want the freedom to incorporate holistic practices, ancient health techniques, international diets, and the like into my career as a dietitian- not just the conventional American forms of treatment. Majors as pre-med?

So I'm going to be a freshman in college this upcoming year, and I am majoring in dietetics. I am really interested in health and medicine especially when it is food related. I love the idea of being a dietitian, but I don't think that it will be challenging enough for me to be happy. I especially am interested in endocrine problems, but don't want to overwhelm myself. As I said, I'm majoring in dietetics but will be doing a two year internship while in college to become a registered dietitian and experience clinical work while taking classes; however, I also will be completing this in three years instead of four (since I already have 47 credits from dual enrolled classes in high school). I almost think that doing research as a doctor or being an endocrinologist would be the best fit for me, but I also want to learn as much as I can about dietetics. This would be extremely fast paced and am not sure if I would be better off to full on commit to one or the other? #doctor #science #medicine #health #nutrition

Is there an area of pharmacy where you help people decrease or stop taking prescriptions by making lifestyle changes?

I am a HUGE advocate for individual healthy lifestyle management rather than fixing problems with a #pill. My #dream is to help people become their own health advocates. I want to teach people lifestyle modifications including #nutrition, #physical activity, and managing medications. I believe certain #prescriptions are over-prescribed and some maintenance medications can be avoided with lifestyle changes. I know it sounds backwards to be a pharmacist reducing medications, but that is my passion especially working in a pharmacy for almost 3 years not and seeing the effects in our society today. #lifestyle #management #health #healthadvocate #publichealth #pharmacy #pharmacist #society #rx #medication #health care #medications #medicine
