Is it time for me to get a part time job?

My name is Briana and I'll be starting my second year at my community college this upcoming fall semester. I'll be taking thirteen units and my parents have been recently pushing me to apply for a job with nods to "we're hiring" signs. I understand with my age I should be working, but I'm not sure if it would be healthy for me, the amount of coursework I'm taking and confusion I continue to have gearing toward a specific major. I know I need to focus on choosing something to plan out the next three years, but I don't think I can with usual coursework and a job to worry about. I understand the extra cash would help and my parents want me to have some type of work experience, but I don't want to burn out from stress coming through each direction especially as a horrible multitasker. Thank you for responding and have a nice day! #first-generation-college-students #community-college #psychology #work-life-balance #women-in-stem #japan

Do you think it's fair that a single standardized test can define you in your education?

I have recently begun applying to colleges. In doing so, I have been asked on numerous occasions what my ACT and SAT score is. Personally, I believe that one test should not be a determining factor in whether or not you get into college. Students have worked their whole primary education in preparing for college and what comes after receiving his or her diploma. A standardized test does not reflect our learning capabilities, but shows how well we can do taking a test. It is not fair to the people who struggle taking test, and those who have worked all 12 years of their education for this moment. #teacher #education #higher-education #japan #principal #professional-development #education-management

How can I prepare to teach English as a second language?

I am interested in going to Japan as an English teacher. Currently, I am planning to attend a university in Virginia to earn a BA in English. I am also studying Japanese on my own. Since I'm new to this whole idea of teaching English as a second language, I was wondering if there is anything else that would help me prepare. I've heard some people recommend taking a TESOL course while I'm at college and I've also been told that getting an English degree is enough. I want to make sure I am getting what I need to show that I've studied well and I'm ready to help Japanese students. Am I making the right choice with my major?

My name is Briana and I am a college freshman. I have recently finished my first semester and am confused. I had previously asked about possible major options, and had thought I was sure, but there's all types of doubts that come up with each choice. I had talked with one of the career advisors on campus, and he more or less directed me with psychology like I had mentioned. Whenever I have the chance, I'll take a personality/career quiz that usually ends up with scientist or psychologist. Now i have and am still considering psychology as a possible career, but I feel, and my mom has noticed too, that it may be a means of obsessing over past events (i.e. bullying). Considering my "experiences", is it healthy for me to continue focusing on something through these means? Aside from money and interest, my second option may be related to math, engineering, and art. Before I choose my classes for the next semester, I will talk with a counselor about any future plans. All I ask from anyone responding is a new perspective regarding if I'm being too emotional in what should be a rational decision. Thank you to anyone who responds and I wish you all happy holidays! #engineering #psychology #college-major #mathematics #japan #animation #choosing-a-major #computer-animation #first-generation

If therapy can help me make the right choice, how do I convince my parents that its neccessary for me?

My name is Briana, and I'm currently a freshman at my community college. Now in one of my previous questions, I had expressed some confusion as what to do for my major and those who responded to this suggested I seek out therapy/ mental help to clear up my concerns associated with past bullying I have experienced. I'm all for it and had previous thoughts considering it, but I'm not sure if my parents would feel similar. With my experiences being bullied, my mom tells me to move on, and it seems she thinks I exaggerate. I can get the help on campus; tuition covers 12 free sessions; and I can follow up with my early classes. But if I stared going, I feel like I would have to hide it, so I prefer to include them in my plans. Keep in mind, my dad wants me choose something with this first year. I want to open with them so they can allow me the time to take these sessions for myself (as they drive me). To anyone who responds, I would like to know of a way to explain this to them without looking desperate in their eyes. Thank you and enjoy the rest of your day. #psychology #college-major #therapy #japan #choosing-a-major #adolescent-therapy
